The Typography Group at Microsoft oversees both the creation of fonts and the systems that render these fonts in Windows. The TrueType system, licensed from Apple, has been Windows' main font system since version 3.1, which proved to be a surprisingly advantageous deal for Microsoft. In collaboration with Monotype, Microsoft's Typography Group created highly readable TrueType versions of Arial, Times New Roman, and Courier New for the release of Windows 3.1. Over time, the capabilities of these fundamental fonts were expanded to include more global languages. In mid-1990s under Robert Norton, TrueType technology was used to commence a series of entirely unique typeface designs.

Desktop: This can be utilized in a desktop workstation. It covers a variety of applications, from personal to professional, in desktop software where the font is available in the menu. For instance, one can install it on their Mac OS X or Windows system. It can also be employed in software like Microsoft Word, Mac Pages, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, etc. One can create and print documents, and static images (.jpeg, .tiff, .png). The desktop licenses are contingent on the number of font users. However, do review the foundry's Desktop license agreement as restrictions may apply.
Webfont: This could be applied to a single domain. Unfortunately, multiple websites cannot share a single webfont license. Hint: For usage in graphic images shown on the website, a Desktop license might be more suitable. There are three types of webfont licenses: Annual, Pay Once, and Pay As You Go.
App: Choose this license if you are creating an app for iOS, Android, or Windows Phone and embedding the font file in your mobile application's code.
Electronic Doc: This license permits font embedding in e-products like eBooks, eMagazines, eNewspapers, or interactive PDFs. Updated versions of previously bought publications do not require a new license. The license is based on the number of publications in which the font is used.
Digital Ad/Email: This license allows fonts to be embedded in HTML5 ads. A kit with webfonts for use within digital ads will be provided. This type of license might be less costly in comparison to Webfont license due to the variable usage patterns between websites and digital ads.
