Originally crafted in 1928, Plak, a typeface designed by Paul Renner, the creator of Futura, has long been a hidden treasure in the world of typography.
Despite Renner's renown, Plak never reached the same level of popularity and remained in need of a digital revival for many years.
Monotype designers Linda Hintz and Toshi Omagari undertook the task of extending the existing three Plak weights.
They delved into meticulous research of the original wood type, resulting in the expansive Neue Plak family, now available in 60 weights that honor Renner's original vision.
This design encompasses a unique blend of characteristics, uniting a bold and assertive exterior with more playful elements, such as the distinctive lowercase "r" and the large dots in the lowercase "i," which add a touch of whimsy.
The typeface also features open or strikethrough counters and a range of hairline widths that strip Renner's initial design down to its essential form.
Neue Plak's display weights are particularly well-suited for editorial work, packaging, and logo design, while its text weight excels in both print and digital applications.
