Designed by Jonathan Hoefler in 1994, the Knockout typeface is a reinterpretation of his earlier Champion Gothic headline series from 1991.
It pays homage to the diverse sans serif typefaces utilized by American job printers in the late 19th century.
Comprising 32 styles, Knockout draws inspiration from both the tall, condensed wood types popular for posters and the smaller "engraver's faces" once favored for stationery.
This font family is a significant contribution to the preservation of American vernacular typography and made its debut in The New York Times Magazine in 1994.
