ITC Avant Garde Gothic

ITC Avant Garde Gothic is a font family that finds its roots in the logo font employed by the Avant Garde magazine.

The concept for the logo and its accompanying headline typeface was conceived by Herb Lubalin.

Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase, a partner in Lubalin's design firm, collaborated to develop this concept into a complete typeface.

In 1974, Ed Benguiat created the condensed fonts, while the obliques were designed in 1977 by André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind, and Christian Mengelt.

The original designs encompassed versions for setting headlines and text copy, although the initial digitization selected only the text design, excluding the ligatures and alternate characters.

The font family comprises five weights (four for condensed), with complementary obliques for the widest width fonts.

In the OpenType version of the font released by ITC, the original 33 alternate characters and ligatures, in addition to extra characters, were incorporated.
