About "Impact"

Impact is a sans-serif typeface designed by American typeface designer Geoffrey Lee in 1965.

Intended as a grotesque display font, Impact was created for the International Typeface Corporation to withstand the impact of printing presses and metal type known to damage type characters and break typefaces.

Featuring ultra-bold strokes with a condensed, tapering form aimed to grab attention, Impact became an instant hit, popularized by meme culture and captions needing “intense” emphasis.

Its exaggerated thick and thin strokes, unusual curves and wedge-shaped serifs give Impact comic book or Old West “Wanted” poster associations.

Despite criticisms of poor legibility at small sizes and narrow language support, Impact continues to be used across media for high-energy headlines, exclamations, and loud statements needing a “loud” typographic voice.

Its cultural associations with intense memes and urgent cries for attention secure Impact's font family impact in the digital age.
