Matthew Carter, with fifty years’ experience in typographic technologies that span from hand-cut punches to digital fonts, is a renowned type designer. He co-founded Bitstream Inc., the digital type foundry, in 1981 after a lengthy association with the Linotype companies, and worked there for ten years. Currently, he is a key figure at Carter & Cone Type Inc., a firm dedicated to the design and production of original typefaces. The company has created custom typefaces for various prestigious publications, companies, and institutions like the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Museum of Modern Art, Microsoft, and Yale University. Carter is well-known for his type designs such as ITC Galliard, Helvetica Compressed, Olympian, Bell Centennial, and more.
