Helvetica is a widely used sans-serif typeface developed in 1957 by Swiss typeface designer Max Miedinger with input from Eduard Hoffmann.
It was commissioned by the Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei (Haas Type Foundry) of Münchenstein, Switzerland.
Haas set out to design a new sans-serif typeface that could compete with the popular Akzidenz-Grotesk in the Swiss market.
The result was Helvetica, a neo-grotesque or realist design featuring unfussy, well-balanced characters, developed using geometric forms.
Its clean, readable, straightforward appearance with a range of weights appealed to the growing mid-century modernist movement and corporations adopting the International Typographic Style.
Helvetica became enormously popular for its inviting visual clarity able to perform in a variety of applications from signage to publications across platforms.
It is now one of the most widely implemented typefaces, with extensive digital distribution and copied versions.
