Filmotype Foundry

In the 1950s, the Filmotype was introduced by founders Allan and Beatrice Friedman. This simple, manually operated photo typesetting machine was like the iMac of its time. It utilized 2-inch filmstrips, offering over 500 stunning display alphabets for users to set headlines on photo paper or film. Eventually, Filmotype transitioned into Alphatype, until the advent of the Mac in 1984 when photo typesetting came to an end. The Font Diner procured this astounding photo film alphabet collection in 2006 and persistently digitizes and releases these impressive gems of 1950s lettering as digital fonts. More about the history of this remarkable company can be found in a companion book released in 2009.
