Copperplate Gothic is a typeface designed in 1901 by Frederic Goudy.
Inspired by the style of penmanship used in 18th century copperplate engravings, it has strong thick and thin strokes with dramatic serifs.
Initially created for display purposes, by the 1930s it became popular for headlines in newspapers aiming to give a more “artistic” and elegant look.
While classified as a Gothic or sans-serif typeface due to its monoline structure, Copperplate Gothic has embellishing details similar to calligraphic scripts.
Its high contrast and ornamental flair have made it an iconic font often associated with invitations or diplomas.
It continues to be used sparingly to add a touch of formality and vintage appeal.
